The True Self Approach to Healing Trauma

Trauma affects every part of the human psyche.  Therefore, any attempt to transform trauma must attend to the whole person!

There are many different healing steps one needs to make in their trauma healing journey.  Bessel van der Kolk in his book “The Body Keeps the Score”, was one of the first practitioners to clearly articulate the need for a holistic approach that utilises different therapies at different stages of the trauma healing journey.

For example, he has demonstrated why traditional western psychological therapies and psychotherapies don’t work well for most people, especially at the beginning of their trauma healing journeys.  This is because there is often very little balance and resilience within the autonomic nervous system.  Van der Kolk argues that the initial step in therapy requires a nervous system focus, using therapies like Neurofeedback, Tapping, Somatic Experiencing, Yoga, and Meditation to stabilise the nervous system.  Only once this has been achieved can more traditional psychotherapies be useful.

"The single most important issue for traumatized people is to find a sense of safety in their own bodies." ~ Dr Bessel van der Kolk

“Most of what we call personality is not a fixed set of traits, only a coping mechanism a person acquired in childhood” ~Dr Gabor Mate`

The Process of Working with us

Firstly, we will take the time to talk to you briefly over the phone.  This is to identify if we are a good fit and determine if you are ready for the healing journey in front of you.

A holistic assessment is the next step.  This is designed to identify where you are in your healing journey, promote safety, rapport and start building resources.  A clear and detailed plan can then be developed, mutually agreed upon and implemented.

In order to take a more spiritually oriented holistic approach to your trauma healing we need to use different therapies at different stages of your healing.  This needs to be done with the one-to-one support of someone you can trust, feel safe with, and has the experience and skills necessary to help you transform your trauma.  Where appropriate we also utilise group work and self-directed educational material.

If that sounds like what you are looking for get in touch and we can talk further.
